DAY 01 / NARITA TO HAKONE

The first day of self-guided travel in Japan

Arriving in the rain, we drove all the way from Narita to Hakone.

On the day of arrival, it was drizzling at Narita Airport, which reminded me of the same weather when I traveled alone in 2000. We took the train from the airport to Narita station, rented an Alphard from Toyota, and drove all the way to Hakone.

Narita Airport

Arriving at Narita on a rainy day

Narita Airport has the cold and humid light of a rainy day. Buying tickets, finding the platform, pushing luggage into the carriage, the rhythm of the first day starts with transferring.

Keisei Narita / Toyota Rent a Car

Put on Alphard and the journey begins to lengthen

Take the train from the airport to Keisei-Narita Station, then walk to Toyota to pick up the car. The moment the trunk is filled with luggage, the mountain road in Hakone really begins.

Long Drive

More than three hours, traveling through the outskirts of Tokyo

The journey from the airport to Hakone passes through downtown Tokyo and takes about three hours. The city outside the window slowly receded behind me, and the car drove all the way into the mountains.

Odawara Supply Stop

Before entering Hakone, first resupply in Odawara

When we arrived at Odakyu, we first restocked the ingredients, because the supermarkets in Hakone closed at 5 o'clock, and there were no supermarkets where we could buy them.

The sky turns dark, and the mountain road brings the journey into Hakone

The sky had turned dark as we approached Hakone, and the setting sun dyed the mountain road orange, making the long journey finally feel like we had arrived.

Bigger cabin than expected

It was past six o'clock when we arrived at the cabin we rented. The first day of travel is usually a long journey. The cabin is larger than originally thought. And it is quite comfortable, and then we will start our nine-day trip in Japan.

Night Notes

Laundry, tidying up, and food and drinks on the table turn a day of long-distance travel into a quiet sense of life.
